Sweet Grass and Sisal Wovens

All items are hand coiled and made out of sweet grass and sisal. The sisal is harvested from the agave plant, stripped, and then the strands are dyed in various colors. That is the material that is on the outer part of the basket which is used to create the patterning. The sweet grass is the inner coil material that the sisal is woven around.  Every thread that you see on the basket is a stitch. Depending on the size, shape, and patterns, each basket can take 3-5 days to make. Each basket has a sewn-in hanger on the back for hanging to add beauty to your home.

While the items are woven in Maine, all materials used for the baskets come from women-owned businesses in Rwanda.

Weaving is an old tradition in Rwanda and is most commonly used to make the famous traditional storage baskets. Traditional Rwandan baskets are made from weaving strands of grass and sisal fibers. Weaving in Rwanda is done using a large size needle rather than a large knitting needle.

Baskets are made out of sweet grass and sisal. The sisal is dyed in various colors and that is the material that is on the outer part of the basket. The sweet grass is the inner coil material that the sisal is woven around.

PATTERNS AND DESIGNS- HOW/WHY THEY ARE CHOSEN.

While the baskets are woven in Maine, all materials used for the baskets come from Rwanda. (women-owned businesses?)

Baskets are available in three sizes:

Small    8 inches*

Medium   10 inches*

Large    12 inches*

*Because the baskets are handmade, measurements can be slightly different from one basket to the next.

Prices range:

Small: $50 – 60

Medium: $65 – 80

Large: $95 – 125

Prices are based on the size of the basket and the detailing in the patterning.
